maybe that's what started my doubt towards jeff's game. avadon, it's wasted potential but the characters especially blackbeard made it for me despite a lot of the cultures being under developed, but the trash mob is pacified at least. I enjoyed all the geneforge game and jeff did something new and maybe the setting is still a lot more generic.Īvadon is. i do like seeing the consequences of the original trilogy plays out, but yeah. The first three installments are remakes of the Exile series.

Visually, the games in the series are all more or less homologous, focusing instead on interweaving plots and sprawling worlds. he tried to make it interesting with more obvious over-arching conspiracy and the shades instead of generic monster invasion, but it's not enough. Avernum is a long-running series of traditionally styled RPGs created by Spiderweb Software. the format is similar with avernum 3 in a way that "Town X got trouble Y". i actually like the continuous world map instead of the "overworld" like in the remakes, but he filled it with too much crap, not much C&C so far (maybe later in the end) and the setting doesn't wow me anymore. When i started avernum 4, i didn't know what i expected, but it's vahnatai again, with a mix of human conspiracy also. avernum 3: epic confrontation with the empire, vahnatai conspiracy, finally built bridges between surface and underworld. avernum 2: finally learn about the stuff we're teased in the first game, the great cave with strong barrier, travelling to vahnatai lands. avernum 1: fresh, interesting setting learning about avernum and its politics / races. Then the final chapter starts and it's like "Okay, go save the world caverns." Then the world gets a whooooooole lot bigger and the result is amazing.Dunno about the rest, but in 4 i already guessed who did it the moment you get out of the first town. I only played the original Exile games, but I can testify that while Crystal Souls starts out sort of linear (with a whole bunch of available detours), it serves to get you into the feel of how much is really on the line, storywise.

Also, 2nd game introduces two playable races not available in the first one. The opinions divide on which one is the better concept. I remember reading on their forums that Avernum 1 is very open world when compared to Avernum 2 that is more story-driven while still de facto open world. Originally posted by Twistor:I think there are a couple of different opinions on which one is better. Now Geneforge on the other hand has a bit more to the overarching story since the whole rebellion kicks off due to what you find on Succia island in the first game which leads to the events of the second one and those events in 2 are what help kick off the start of the rebellion which starts in Geneforge 3 and ends in Geneforge 5. It's not needed to play part 1 to enjoy part 2 since like all Spiderweb games while the series tells a overaching story each installment is stand alone so you usually don't miss much by skipping one or more installments like the only thing you miss out on going from Avernum 2 and not playing the first one is seeing the reason why the battle between Avernum and the Empire happens since it was tied to the end of the first game. Zaxx Avernum 1 was remade as Avernum: Escape from the PitĪs for your last question. The setting's story is a continuum throughout the series but otherwise every game tells its own story, only referred to in the backstories of the other games. I believe you can enjoy this one well without having played the first one. Anyway one thinks, both (1 and 2) were good games back then.Īnd I'm assuming anyone can buy this game and play it fine without ever having played any of the Avernum games (including the first one) My experience matches with what I've read. Myself, I've played through the first Avernum (the original one) as well as the remake Avernum: Escape from the Pit, but I've only played around half-way through (the original) Avernum 2.

I think there are a couple of different opinions on which one is better. Is the 2nd Avernum a lot better game then the original? If I'm understanding correctly your confusion: Avernum: Escape from the Pit, that is on Steam, is already a remake of the original Avernum, which in itself was a remake of Exile: Escape from the Pit. I guess that I am still a little confused as to why he would remake #2 with better graphics and all and no with the very first one.
